2 CONT Edward How with his wife and five children, embarked on the "Truelove
2 CONC " for New England on the 19th of September 1635. On reaching this coun
2 CONC try, they settled at what is now known as Lynn, Massachusetts. Edwar
2 CONC d was admitted freeman 8 Dec 1636. He was chosen deputy to the Genera

2 CONC ow, Elizabeth How, was appointed by the General Court to administer hi
2 CONC s estate on 22 May 1639. His death is mentioned in Winthrop's Histor
2 CONC y of New England, as follows: "One Mr. Howe of Lynn, a godly man, an
2 CONC d a deputy of the last general court, after the court was ended, and h
2 CONC e had dined, being in health as he used to be, went to pass over to Ch

2 CONT 3/8/98 Edward How with his wife and five children embarked on the "Tru

2 CONC 0, Elizabeth, aged 56, Jeremie, aged 21, Sara, aged 12, Ephraim, age
2 CONC d 9, Isaac, aged 7, William, aged 6.

2 CONT On reaching this country, they settled in what is now known as Lynn, M
2 CONC ass. He was admitted freeman December 8, 1636. He was a man of much ab
2 CONC ility, of good report, and a highly respected citizen. He was chosen d

2 CONC d very suddenly in April 1639, and his widow was appointed by the Gene

2 CONT
2 CONT Of Edwards ancestry we have little information. It has been a long sta

2 CONC here seems to be strong support in the foundation of this tradition. T
2 CONC here may have been other Howes in Lynn prior to 1635 but little is kno

1 NOTE Aunt Kate and the Answer to Prayer
2 CONT written by Lee A. Howe, Jr., ca. 1979
2 CONT
2 CONT You boys probably never met Aunt Kate and Uncle George. She was Dad'
2 CONC s sister and Uncle George was her husband. They were the members of Da
2 CONC d's family that we were best acquainted with-- they were living in Syr
2 CONC acuse when we moved to Warners and so could come out for a Sunday visi
2 CONC t quite often. I don't know which adjective to use, but they had no ch
2 CONC ildren, so she was unbearable, or impregnable, or inconceivable. I sup
2 CONC pose he could have been the one who was non-productive, but at least-
2 CONC - they had no children. They were nice people who took a great deal o
2 CONC f interest in Lee and his family. Some times you got the feeling tha
2 CONC t they felt they knew more about bringing up children than Mom and Da
2 CONC d did, but that's a forgivable sin-- everyone who has had no childre
2 CONC n to raise always feels more competent than the frustrated parent wh
2 CONC o looks at his kids and says, 'When will they ever grow up?'
2 CONT
2 CONT Aunt Kate and Uncle George were religious-- real religious. They wen
2 CONC t to Church every Sunday, participated in Church affairs and business
2 CONC . Uncle George even attended Moody Bible Institute for a time. Not tha
2 CONC t he ever gave up business to go into the ministry, but enough Bible t
2 CONC raining to enable him to support any position he took with sound quota
2 CONC tions from the Bible. Neither was obnoxious-- they were genuinely an
2 CONC d sincerely pious in the best sense of the word. They were quite proud
2 CONC , I think, when your father declared for the ministry. They were proba
2 CONC bly equally dismayed when he chose that hot-bed of liberalism, Union
2 CONC , for his seminary but their heart was in the right place and they rem
2 CONC embered us in their will.
2 CONT
2 CONT Since this story is about what happened on one of their visits to th
2 CONC e farm, I'd better refresh your memories about that farm.
2 CONT
2 CONT Really, you shouldn't call it a 'farm'. it was a lesser spread, too bi
2 CONC g to be called a spacious lawn, and too small to be called a ranch. "F
2 CONC armette" might do. At any rate it was a little over 70 acres, one mil
2 CONC e down the road from Warners to Syracuse-- or, in proper perspective
2 CONC , one mile from Warners on the road from Syracuse to Warners. On the e
2 CONC dge of the village was a sign -
2 CONT
2 CONT WARNERS
2 CONT POPULATION 459
2 CONT Please drive carefully
2 CONT
2 CONT
2 CONT They never changed that sign. When Betty was born, eg., they should ha
2 CONC ve written, Population 460, but they just shrugged their shoulders an
2 CONC d said, "Sooner or later, someone will die and even it up." Sure enoug
2 CONC h, someone did.
2 CONT
2 CONT To get back to the farm. It was bounded on the south by the road fro
2 CONC m Syracuse to Warners, on the East by a country dirt road, on the nort
2 CONC h by another farm and a brickyard, and on the west by the same brickya
2 CONC rd and parts of another farm. The farmette was trisected by two railro
2 CONC ad lines-- the NY Central and the West Shore, running parallel to th
2 CONC e road from Syracuse to Warners, and separated, in each instance by so
2 CONC me 100 yards. The house was located in the southeast corner about 75 y
2 CONC ards from the dirt road and 15 from the south to west road. Before I r
2 CONC ush ahead with this brief anecdote, let me say a word or two about th
2 CONC e trains. There were four sets of tracks on the NY Central and two o
2 CONC n the West Shore. Over these two lines passed all the freight from N
2 CONC Y to Chicago and points west, as well as some of the finest and fastes
2 CONC t passenger trains in the world-- you ever hear of the Empire State Ex
2 CONC press or the NY Limited? If you've never had a ride on a sleeper, yo
2 CONC u haven't slept. The luxury of even an upper bunk!
2 CONT
2 CONT Due to the proximity to the house, the fast trains and the heavily-lad
2 CONC en freights (sometimes with 100 box cars) would make the house trembl
2 CONC e and the bed shake. (People who can sleep through a San Francisco ear
2 CONC thquake got their training in a house like ours!) And, due to the coun
2 CONC try road, every train had to announce its intention of crossing that c
2 CONC rossing by three loud hoots from their hooter. Is it any wonder tha
2 CONC t I was able to sleep in my bedroom in Union even though it was direct
2 CONC ly opposite the place where the subway emerges and becomes an elevate
2 CONC d around 120th Street?
2 CONT
2 CONT Have patience, please, we've almost come to the end of our story. Aun
2 CONC t Kate and I had been out for a ride in the buggy, with good ole Lad
2 CONC y making the wheels spin on the way back to the barn. As we came ove
2 CONC r the West Shore tracks and looked to the next crossing, we saw one o
2 CONC f the long, long freight trains stalled on the NYC track. I slowed dow
2 CONC n the horse and prepared to spend the next 15-20 minutes waiting for t
2 CONC he train to move on. As I drew close to the tracks, a miracle happene
2 CONC d and the train came apart right at the crossing. We kept right on goi
2 CONC ng-- like Moses crossing the sea. As we went down the grade to the oth
2 CONC er side, Aunt Kate sighed and said, "What a shame! What a shame!" I as
2 CONC ked her what she meant and she replied-- "What a shame that no one off
2 CONC ered a prayer-- that was such a perfect answer!"
2 CONT
2 CONT Aunt Kate may be remembered by others for some of her other sterling q
2 CONC ualities. I shall always be thankful that she did not let her piosit
2 CONC y stifle her sense of humor.

2 CONT
2 CONT After 35 years of service in YMCA work Lee A. Howe, activities secreta
2 CONC ry of the "Y" will retire Saturday.
2 CONT
2 CONT The retirement of Mr. Howe was announced today by James B. Hillick, ne
2 CONC w general secretary of the YMCA. Mr. Howe came to Utica Oct. 1, 1921
2 CONC . He plans to return to his home at Warners, N. Y. near Syracuse.
2 CONT
2 CONT When Mr. Howe first came to Utica he was assistant boys' work secretar
2 CONC y after which he took charge of the boys' division. He directed the pr
2 CONC ogram of activities which included gymnasium work, athletics, swimmin
2 CONC g and club work. He established the annual games tournament on New Yea
2 CONC r's Day. Mr. Howe at that time directed the summer camp on Lake Ontari
2 CONC o.
2 CONT
2 CONT The secretary retires at the conclusion of nearly 15 years of servic
2 CONC e with the Utica YMCA. He has been granted a pension for the years o
2 CONC f service he has put in "Y" work.
2 CONT
2 CONT During his first years with the local "Y" Mr. Howe was in charge of th
2 CONC e New Boys' Club. The present Boys' Club is an outgrowth of the club w
2 CONC hich Mr. Howe first directed. Mr. Howe was elected general chairman o
2 CONC f the Older Boys' Conference at Geneva and he also taught in the Silve
2 CONC r Bay Summer School at Lake George.
2 CONT
2 CONT In 1925 Mr. Howe was made senior membership secretary. At that time Mr
2 CONC . Howe said the members numbered approximately 1,500. Mr. Howe was act

2 CONC sitation nights were established with church men's clubs, service club
2 CONC s and other units taking part.
2 CONT
2 CONT Mr. Howe for a number of years edited the Men of Utica, a weekly pape
2 CONC r containing association news.
2 CONT
2 CONT Three years ago he was placed in charge of the activities program. I
2 CONC n his new position he continued some of his former work and added a nu
2 CONC mber of new young men's clubs including the unemployed young men and t
2 CONC he Polish young men. The clubs which Mr. Howe. Had a definite part i
2 CONC n organizing were the Tau Delta, the Phi Beta Sigma, the Fortnightly
2 CONC , the Bridge, the Utica City Checker, the Chess, Radio and Stamp Clubs
2 CONC .
2 CONT
2 CONT The association has Mr. Howe to thank for the establishment of the For
2 CONC um series. This is in its ninth year.
2 CONT
2 CONT "Vocational counseling, employment service and friendly fellowship," M
2 CONC r. Howe said, "have given me the thrill, of my life."
2 CONT
2 CONT He began YMCA work in 1895. He has been at the work almost continuousl

2 CONT -----
2 CONT
2 CONT The following is exerpted from a chronology from his memoirs:
2 CONT
2 CONT Summer, 1927: Served as pastor of the Church of Christ in Nedrow, NY
2 CONC . Worked weekdays at Solvay Process Company. Prepared two sermons eac
2 CONC h week, while riding the street-car to work. Pity the Congregation
2 CONC !
2 CONT
2 CONT 1928: Graduation from Colgate in May-June.
2 CONT Married your mother, Lonnelle Crossley, August 12.
2 CONT Started at Union Theological Seminary in September.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1929: The Depression - Tuff, tuff, times.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1930: Served the Church of the Good Shepherd, Universalist.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1928 - 1931: Served as children's worker in mission centers, two to th
2 CONC ree evenings a week. Rather low income.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1931: Graduated from Union Seminary.
2 CONT July - Ordained in the First Baptist Church, Syracuse. Bernard C. Clau
2 CONC sen was pastor at that time.
2 CONT September - Began ministry in Pulaski Baptist Church.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1932: Lon and I registered Socialist and voted for Norman Thomas for P
2 CONC resident, which we continued to do as long as he was on the ballot
2 CONC .
2 CONT
2 CONT 1933 - 1938: Served as a counselor at Camp Neyoraca each summer.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1938 - 1949: Served as pastor, First Baptist Church, Oneida.
2 CONT Became pastor at Oneida in September.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1940 - 1973: For almost the entire period our nation had a Military Co
2 CONC nscription law. It was called by different names, the Selective Servic
2 CONC e Act, being most common.
2 CONT
2 CONT December 7, 1941: Pearl Harbor
2 CONT
2 CONT September, 1942: Selective Service amended to include provision that a
2 CONC ll men under 62 must register. As a clergyman, I was eligible for exem
2 CONC ption from active military duty, but not from registration. As a consc
2 CONC ientious objector, I was opposed to the draft as being part of the mil
2 CONC itary program. I did not register. The SS Board made out a card and ma
2 CONC iled it to me. I returned the card. I have learned since that the Boar
2 CONC d was angry and baffled. They decided that it would be best to ignor
2 CONC e me completely. Your Uncle Don served in the Navy and saw action in t
2 CONC he Far East. We all rejoiced when he returned without having been woun
2 CONC ded.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1949: We moved to Webster in February and continued there until Februa
2 CONC ry 1959 (it may have been 1960). While in Webster, I. testified at a h
2 CONC earing in Washington, on behalf of the American Baptist Peace Fellowsh
2 CONC ip, against the continuation of the Draft. Our testimony had little ef
2 CONC fect, the Congress voted to extend Selective Service and was not unti
2 CONC l June of 1973 that it finally allowed to expire.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1959 - 1971: I served as Executive Director of the Schenectady Area Co
2 CONC uncil of Churches. I could have retired in December of 1970 but the Bo
2 CONC ard allowed me to continue through March of 1971. We spent our time lo
2 CONC oking for housing and supplying in various Churches in the area.
2 CONT
2 CONT September, 1971: Doug and Lee, with two of their sons, helped us to mo
2 CONC ve to Penn Yan, an experience I am sure none of us will ever forget. I
2 CONC t rained in torrents the day we loaded up, and continued off and on th
2 CONC e next day when we unloaded. We had a caravan for moving - Lee lead th
2 CONC e way, with the largest U-Haul trailer attached to his station wagon
2 CONC , I came next with our camper on the bumper of our car, and Douglas, w
2 CONC ith the Largest U-Haul truck pulling another of the largest U-Haul tra
2 CONC ilers.
2 CONT
2 CONT After Retirement
2 CONT
2 CONT 1971: From November of 1971 to October, 1972, I served as Interim Past
2 CONC or of the Seneca Falls Presbyterian Church.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1973 - 1974: From June 73 to December 74, I served the Naples Baptis
2 CONC t Church.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1975: March 9 to December 28, I served the Milo and Keuka Lake Baptis
2 CONC t Churches.
2 CONT
2 CONT 1976: May and June, interim-assistant pastor at the United Church of C
2 CONC anandaigua.
2 CONT
2 CONT August, 1976 - February, 1977: Seneca Falls Baptist.

2 CONT
2 CONT The following was written by Ruth Schlottman Hugenbruch
2 CONT on April 1996
2 CONT
2 CONT
2 CONT Carl E. Schlottman, My Father
2 CONT
2 CONT My father was a remarkable man, a man who grew up in the early 1900s w
2 CONC hen life was not easy. His family was poor. His father worked inte
2 CONC rmittently as a tailor in Rochester, Buffalo and as far away as Chicag
2 CONC o, wherever he could find work. His mother cleaned office buildings a
2 CONC t night in downtown Rochester, and had to walk all the way home becaus
2 CONC e money for the street car was needed for food.
2 CONT
2 CONT Yet after leaving high school, Carl found work, and help support his f
2 CONC amily until he met and married my mother, Delia Glodgett in 1925. The
2 CONC y both worked and saved to buy a house when my older sister was on th
2 CONC e way in 1928, and they lived in that house over fifty years until th
2 CONC e mid 1980s when they moved to Florida.
2 CONT
2 CONT My Dad was not only capable, hardworking and generous, he was also ing
2 CONC enious. I watched him paint his own home many times (always white), i
2 CONC nstall new roofs, build his own garage, put in a beautiful cement driv
2 CONC eway, build a flat bed trailer to move working materials and to transp
2 CONC ort camping gear to and from the Adirondaks. In 1945 he designed an
2 CONC d constructed his own freezer which he installed in our garage. He he
2 CONC lped slaughter some of the animals that helped fill that freezer. Lat
2 CONC er he renovated the whole main floor of our house then finish off th
2 CONC e basement and the attic.
2 CONT
2 CONT During World War II we saw little of him because he worked seven day
2 CONC s per week for may hours each day. He was a Kodak admirer because Kod
2 CONC ak really took care of and appreciated their employees. He worked dil
2 CONC igently for thirty years as an electrician and was promoted to foreman
2 CONC .
2 CONT
2 CONT He never attended college, but was quick to learn and had a fantasti
2 CONC c memory of many details about Rochester and Monroe County. He ha
2 CONC d a quick wit as well as a quick temper. He loved to tease, but wa
2 CONC s a strict disciplinarian.
2 CONT
2 CONT He had many hobbies. He loved gardening and grew a vegetable garden e
2 CONC ach year, the produce of which he shared with the family and neighbors
2 CONC . Each year the garden grew bigger and bigger, but weeds did not dar
2 CONC e grow there. Early on he planted an orchard of about ten prune tree
2 CONC s at the back of our lot. Despite the fact that they were never spray
2 CONC ed, they proved to be very polific. But since no one liked the fruit
2 CONC , they eventually wasted away until only one remained. He also raise
2 CONC d peaches, grapes and a fig tree which had to be buried every year
2 CONC .
2 CONT
2 CONT Photography and a career at Kodak went hand in hand. He built his ow
2 CONC n dark room containing development equipment and a photo enlarger (w
2 CONC e had black-and-white photos of people and places coming out of our ea
2 CONC rs). At the same time he purchased a 16mm camera which he used regula
2 CONC rly and through which he left us some marvelous memories of our childh
2 CONC ood and adolescent years. Dads determination was remarkable. He onc
2 CONC e photographed a University of Rochester football game that began in t
2 CONC he late afternoon and lasted through dusk. The movies got darker an
2 CONC d darker until one can make out little of what was going on. But he w
2 CONC as insistent on photographing the entire game (he could be stubborn)
2 CONC .
2 CONT
2 CONT Dad, Mom, his sister and husband vacationed in Canada each year as w
2 CONC e got older, and spent most of their time fishing for walleyed pike
2 CONC . They would return home with enough fish to freeze that would last u
2 CONC s through the better part of the year.
2 CONT
2 CONT Dad had a fondness for dogs. While we were young he owned a chow do
2 CONC g and a pointer to hunt with. When he became too busy to care for a d
2 CONC og, we were permitted to choose and own our own. Later, when he retir
2 CONC ed, he and mother bought a Welsh Terrier that they both adored. The
2 CONC y groomed him and walked him meticulously. They would talk baby talk
2 CONC to the dog. The first time I saw him cry was when his dog had to b
2 CONC e put to sleep.
2 CONT
2 CONT Though Dad did not attend church regularly as an adult, he did as a ch
2 CONC ild, and learned many gospel hymns and memorized many passages of th
2 CONC e Bible. He loved challenging discussions with members of Jehovahs W
2 CONC itnesses who would come and spend hours arguing and discussing variou
2 CONC s parts of the Bible together. When he first came to the Rochester Fr
2 CONC iendly Home he would sit outside and sing the old hymns that he learne
2 CONC d as a kid. Many would join him, and until the day he died, during ea
2 CONC ch of our visits we had a song fest singing some of those old Gospel S
2 CONC ongs.
2 CONT
2 CONT Dad was a remarkable man who did so many different things in his lifet
2 CONC ime that it is difficult to remember them all. He raised us to be car
2 CONC ing useful human beings as was he. What a fine legacy to leave behind
2 CONC .

2 CONT
2 CONT My Mother
2 CONT
2 CONT Delia Victoria Glodgett Schlottman was born in a log cabin in the farm
2 CONC ing district near the town of Orleans in Vermont. She had three broth
2 CONC ers and three sisters. Her father raised cows and grew enough for th
2 CONC e family to live, but they were very poor. Her stories about her chil
2 CONC dhood were about riding to church in a sleigh, baking bread, making ma
2 CONC ple syrup and about the animals on the farm, for which she had a dee
2 CONC p love.
2 CONT
2 CONT When she was a teenager she left home and made her way west all the wa
2 CONC y to Rochester NY. Mostly she earned her lively-hood as a waitress
2 CONC .
2 CONT
2 CONT After she met and married my father Carl Ernst Schlottman. They purch
2 CONC ased a three bedroom home in the suburbs and started raising a family
2 CONC . Unlike most wives at the time, she worked in a factory and hire
2 CONC d a baby sitter to look after the children. There were three girls, L
2 CONC ois, Ruth and Norma. My Mother not only worked full time, but sewed f
2 CONC or us and more well-to-do families on weekends. She also canned all o
2 CONC ur vegetables, made jellies, jams and preserves and tried her hand a
2 CONC t home made wine.
2 CONT
2 CONT This overburdened list of chores didnt dull her spirit. She was o
2 CONC n a bowling team; played tennis, and swam in the summertime. And sh
2 CONC e always found time to have a vacation - usually camping for a week i
2 CONC n the Adirondak Mountains. Mother not only did all her own cooking, s
2 CONC he always had dessert on hand, home made pies, cookies and cakes.
2 CONT
2 CONT Delia loved a party. When she was going to go out she was so excite
2 CONC d and took extra time to dress and primp and always was the life of th
2 CONC e party. My children looked forward to her visits, because they woul
2 CONC d play OLD MAID. But we always knew when mother drew the Old Maid, be
2 CONC cause she would laugh so hard. And we always knew when someone drew i
2 CONC t from her because she would laugh just as hard.
2 CONT
2 CONT She had a very soft heart. When Grandmother was dying of cancer, alth
2 CONC ough mother worked all day in a factory, she took her turn every thir
2 CONC d night, staying up to look after grandmother. When I brought hom
2 CONC e a stray dog, she got up each morning in the winter and fixed him ho
2 CONC t oatmeal before leaving for work.
2 CONT
2 CONT One day at work, there was an accident. When Mother turned on their m
2 CONC achine, her fingers got caught in a pulley and two were cut off. Sh
2 CONC e calmly picked them up, and refusing assistance, drove herself to th
2 CONC e doctors, where he sewed them back on. Thats when Mom decided to re
2 CONC tire. When my father retired too, they moved to Fort Myers and live
2 CONC d there each winter. There, mother continued to reach out, baking lem
2 CONC on pies (they had a lemon tree) for the neighbors, and spending time w
2 CONC ith the neighborhood children. She remained active despite a heart pr
2 CONC oblem until she was sticken with a stroke about 1985. Even though sh
2 CONC e entered a home, she continued to walk and was a favorite because o
2 CONC f her sense of fun and her thoughtfulness. She always showed so muc
2 CONC h love for her family and those around her. As the strokes recurred s
2 CONC he slowly lost most of the skills we take for granted - reading, writi
2 CONC ng, talking and walking. But until the end she was a brave soul and d
2 CONC id her best with what was left.

2 CONT In 1900 she met her future husband, the Rev. Henry Edward Crossley, an

2 CONT
2 CONT Henry Harrison is listed in the 1860 census as living Appomattox Count

2 CONC d had a post office. Not much of it remains today/except a few houses
2 CONC . He and his wife moved to Brookneal to live .with his son Lacy Walter
2 CONC , and he helped Lacy with the mill there as well as having his own fur

2 CONT
2 CONT Henry Harrison was in the Civil War, fought for the Confederacy, and w
2 CONC as supposedly taken prisoner at Gettysburg. When he was released afte
2 CONC r the war, he bought a cow and walked it all the way back to Virgini
2 CONC a to feed his family. We are skeptical that this really occured sinc
2 CONC e a book about the 56th Virginia Infantry says that he "was surrendere
2 CONC d at Appomattox". Henry was a cabinet maker and his furniture was high
2 CONC ly prized by local people for its quality. He also made caskets and wa
2 CONC gons.
2 CONT The book "56th Virginia Infantry", states:
2 CONT
2 CONT "On the morning of April 12, 1865 when Lee's Army stacked their guns o
2 CONC n the rain soaked ground at Appomattox Court House, there were 32 me
2 CONC n of the 56th Virginia left. One Captain, one First Sergeant, one Quar
2 CONC termaster Sergeant, and twenty five Privates. (Pvt. Henry Harrison Rus
2 CONC h was one of them). He is listed in the index "HH Rush". He had com
2 CONC e a long way since July 12, 1861 when he enlisted with the Charlotte D
2 CONC efenders in Charlotte County, Virginia".
2 CONT
2 CONT This quote from the book may put to rest some of the rumors concernin
2 CONC g Henry's activities after the war.
2 CONT
2 CONT We have a certificate signed by the Virginia State Librarian, Randolp
2 CONC h W. Church, dated November 10,1953, and sent to Mrs. Lillie Belle Wam
2 CONC pler. It states that "H.H. Rush was a private in Company Y, 56th Virgi
2 CONC nia Regiment Infantry commanded by Captain Robert V. Thomas. He enlist
2 CONC ed in 1862 at Richmond and served 3 years until the surrender at Appom
2 CONC attox". We also have information that his Company was "G" not "Y"
2 CONC .
2 CONT
2 CONT On his Confederate Pension Application, dated April 13, 1904, Henry Ha
2 CONC rrison Rush stated, " was born in Buckingham County, Virginia, serve
2 CONC d 3 years, Company G, 56th Va. Infantry, surrendered at Appomattox. H
2 CONC e was age 78 years at the time of his application, usual occupation: f
2 CONC urniture business, resided at Brookneal, 6 years at present address.
2 CONC " It appears that Henry moved to Brookneal Virginia in1898 and lived t
2 CONC here until his death in 1908. His wife Elizabeth was with him for appr
2 CONC oximately 3 years until her death in 1901. I (Woody Rush) have purchas
2 CONC ed the book about the 56th Virginia by the Young's. It is a very inter
2 CONC esting look into life during the Civil War and Henry's time.
2 CONT
2 CONT Chataigne's Virginia Gazetteer and Business Directory for Appomattox C
2 CONC ounty, Virginia 1888-1889 shows:
2 CONT
2 CONT "Coach and Wagonmakers"
2 CONT "Rush, HH, Chap"
2 CONT
2 CONT The above note concerning the Virginia Gazetteer was taken from that D
2 CONC irectory over the Internet. Evidently Henry had a business in Chap Vir
2 CONC ginia, which was on Rt.#694 in Prince Edward County. He may have had a
2 CONC n outlet to his main business there or he lived there and conducted hi
2 CONC s business in Chap. Henry lost 2 of his children, Willie in 1884 and V
2 CONC irgie in 1891. They are both buried at the Lee #56 Southside Cemeter
2 CONC y which is near Chap.

2 CONT As of 8/2001, we think we have answered the riddle of George's suppose
2 CONC d second wife. The "Mildred" or "Mildora" that we have seen in the 185
2 CONC 0 Buckingham County Census is probably a nickname for Amelia King. O
2 CONC n some information that was forwarded to us from Floyd Rush, informati

2 CONT A story told to Woody Rush by Floyd Rush. He was told by Earl Lightfoo
2 CONC t Rush as relayed to him concerning Amelia. Amelia was living in Bucki
2 CONC ngham County with her son Peter in 1860, three years before she died
2 CONC . She was also there in 1863. She could hear canon fire from a battl
2 CONC e in the area during the Civil War. She had 2 sons fighting for the Co
2 CONC nfederate army at the time and was very worried that they would be kil
2 CONC led. She was on her back porch, listening to the battle and fell ove
2 CONC r at her house. She died from either a stroke or a heart attack. We ha

2 CONC h would have been an enormous sum in those days. On page four of th

2 CONC s the guardian of David Rush, and Henry Eddison guardian of Henry Rush
